Environment & Heritage
Marine Environment
The Port of Dampier is located within the Dampier archipelago (satellite photo of region ). The region as a whole is relatively pristine with high marine environmental values. These have been recognised and plans are in place to protect much of the area in a marine park neighbouring the port. The marine park will be managed by the Department of Environment & Conservation.
The Port primarily includes open water suitable for commercial shipping and port operations with sensitive foreshore communities generally restricted to the inner harbour area. Although these communities are representative of those preserved by the proposed marine park, the DPA recognises the significance of the region and is committed to working with stakeholders to ensure that port activities are carried out in an environmentally responsible manner and for all port operations to have a minimal impact on the environment.
Port Land
Dampier Port Authority land is located on the Burrup Peninsula which is an area that has high heritage values. Much of the Burrup Peninsula has been set aside for conservation purposes by the proposed Burrup Peninsula conservation reserve managed by the Department of Environment and Conservation. A draft management plan for the reserve is currently in place (Management Plan -http://www.naturebase.net/content/view/645/1223/)
The DPA is committed to conducting its operations to meet the needs of current and future generations through an integration of environmental protection, social advancement and economic prosperity.
